WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Introductory Workshop:

In this lively, exploratory workshop, using the softly impasto medium of cold wax mixed with oil paint, discover how to add layers to create overlapping colour fields and experiment with texturing and mark-making. The focus will be on combining techniques of cold wax medium with the structure of painting and the elements of design. The intention is to balance playful, intuitive exploration with an understanding of composition. There will be digital slide presentations and group discussions about art and process combined with lots of individual attention to help develop each student's painting vocabulary and personal direction.

Intermediate Workshop:
This workshop will take the artist from the Introductory level in Cold Wax Medium toward the Advanced Level Workshop. It will involve more working time in a classroom environment, along with group discussions, power point presentations and one-on-one interviews with Janice. There will be a brief review of the concepts and techniques taught in the Introductory class. Each student will work at their own level, with plenty of input from the instructor. Artists will start to make choices about their intentions and the direction of their work and they will begin to work in a series.

Advanced Workshop:
In the Advanced Workshop, artists will continue to develop their work in cold wax medium and oil. There will be plenty of time for painting and a lot of individual attention. The focus of the workshop will be on developing a personal visual language and direction by committing to working in a series and building a body of work, with a solid understanding of the elements of art.  We will discuss how artists  can talk about and critique their own art as well as the work of others. As well, Janice will schedule individual feedback sessions with each artist. This workshop provides an opportunity for experienced artists to move their work forward and to explore new directions.

Art Mentoring Testimonial:
As a textile artist, I was interested in working with Janice because I lean towards minimalism. My mentorship sessions with Janice gave me new targets to aim for in my studio practice. It was refreshing to have sound assessment of my current work and guidance to learn lessons that I did not realize I needed. After working with Janice my art has risen to a new level. My work remains my own but the influence is undeniable.—Kathleen Probst

Workshop Testimonials:
You must be pleased with all the positive feedback about the [Iceland] workshop and your instruction. I am not at all surprised. You are the best. It is why I keep taking your workshops no matter what the level. I always learn something and come away inspired to keep on making art.—Oxanna Adams

Janice is a remarkable teacher. She has an extraordinary gift for breaking abstract art down into bite-sized concrete pieces. I love her honesty and humour. Her joy in creating is positively infectious.  —Jeanne Lamon

I took Janice’s workshop because I am moving towards making my work more powerful through simplification. The workshop sessions guided us through a perfect combination for learning; through teaching, discussion, reflection and practice. Thank you Janice, for helping me to recognize some of my inner barriers and then gently nudging me to work through them. Visually, my compositions have become much stronger. Internally, I am discovering, and strengthening, the connection between my work and the real essence of my subject.—Linda Virio

I recently participated in an advanced workshop in Janice’s Rocktwood studio. It is a marvellous setting with woods, fields and streams all around. The solitude was wonderful for eliminating all distractions and getting down to painting “business”. The workshop involved a combination of creative meditation, technical practice, and ongoing assessment of our own and each other’s work. I came away understanding the basis of composition in abstract art, and achieving greater technical ability to carry out my visions. I highly recommend any workshop led by Janice who is an amazing facilitator as well as a talented artist.—Mary Perdue
